AUSTRALIAN SUPERMOTARD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2007 FINAL ROUND: TEAM SXV APRILIA RACING ON THE PODIUM Team SXV Aprilia Racing, along with the other teams in the Australian Supermotard Championships have traveled long and hard to get down to Melbourne’s Calder Park after a double header round in Queensland two weeks ago. “Australia’s such a big place and driving the truck between championship rounds certainly proves that point”, said team technical supervisor Dave Ward. “However we got the bikes serviced and turned around ready for this last round in good time and we’re pretty confident that both Josh Mcfarlane on the 550 and Alex Gobert on the 450 will have a chance to shine at Calder Park as the venue has a fairly long straight.” As things happened, the track the team used for a test session last month was changed to a tighter, shorter, stop-start layout. “The bike is good here, but the advantage we thought we’d have has been negated by the tighter layout”, said S1 rider McFarlane. “But it’s the same for everyone and I’m enjoying riding here.” He added. Unfortunately, lady luck seemed to dog Team SXV Aprilia Racing during this round. First, Josh suffered a fairly significant shoulder injury in a crash during practice and then Alex’s number one bike suffered its first mechanical problem of the year. “I’m sore, but it’s not too bad”, claimed McFarlane. “I got tangled up with Graham Cheney, went down and then his bike tried to park itself in my armpit. I’ll be fine to ride but we’re going to need a lot of ice today!” “I’m not sure what’s wrong with the bike, but rather than spending time trying to fix it, we’ve made the decision that I’ll ride the spare.” Said Gobert. “That’s fair enough as Josh needs the team to concentrate on him and his bike – he’s fighting for a podium, whereas I’m likely to finish fourth or fifth overall. “My spare is a stock bike with a race pipe, so it’ll be a bit different compared to the Van Den Bosch replica, however it’s still got plenty of mumbo and it’s fun!” Race One in the S1 class saw all the usual contenders up the front. Angus Reekie on his KTM won, followed by Husqvarna’s Graham Cheney with Josh on his SXV550 close on his heels. A much better start for McFarlane in the second race meant Josh was able to finish the first lap in second and maintain that position all the way to the flag. Unfortunately for Cheney, his bike expired resulting in a DNF. This meant Josh closed up to within six points – the Aprilia rider now had to beat Cheney by this margin to take second overall in the championship ensuring race three was a make or break one for both riders. Race Three saw Reekie again leading into the first turn with McFarlane snapping at his heels. Then as they accelerated onto the banking for the first time McFarlane’s rear tyre slid out and a pursuing Cheney clipped the Aprilia’s back wheel. Josh saved the resulting high-side, but stalled the SXV and had to restart – now with a distinct gap to the leading pair. “I tried like I’ve never tried before and was slowly catching Graham”, said Josh. “Then I got into the last corner of the dirt section too hot and the front folded. I immediately picked up the bike and got going again, but several guys had got past so it was a struggle to catch up. “In the end, I ran out of laps and finished 5th. Not a great result, but enough for second on the day and third overall in the championship. I’m sore and I’m upset that we didn’t get second but it’s on the podium and a good foundation for next year.” Alex Gobert, riding the team’s only SXV450 Van Den Bosch replica, was very happy after the first qualifying session. “The bike is quick and very responsive here – and it needs to be because the track is very stop-start. I was third quickest and so things are getting better for me every time I ride the bike.” In the second qualifier, the young racer-journalist from AMCN magazine felt the bike slow after two laps and brought it back into the pits. “It’s lost some power and we can’t fix it in a hurry, so I’m going to ride the spare.” He said. After finishing 12th in race one and 8th in race two, Gobert was reflective. “I haven’t used the spare all season – that’s how reliable the number one bike has been. So when I went out I found I had to bed the brakes back in. Although 12th and 8th isn’t the best result, I was getting faster and faster as the races progressed – it’s simply a matter of adapting to the stock bike which is very different to ride than the Van Den Bosch. The stock bike is a lot more stable and slower steering, basically it’s set up for the road, which makes getting around the very tight corners here a problem. So I’m really looking forward to next year as the constant progress the team has made will stand us in good stead for the 08 Championship.” “Overall, the season has seen some great results for the innovative v-twin Aprilias.” Said Mark Barnett, John Sample Automotive’s Marketing Manager. “We’ve used this championship to prove that Aprilia’s innovation and technical prowess in building a v-twin dirt bike has been a major success. We’ll be back next year with 2008 model bikes and with even more determination to win a championship. “I’d especially like to thank the privateer guys riding Aprilias in motard racing this last season.” Added Barnett. “We’ve had several contesting throughout the year and three travelled all the way here for this meeting. Shane Stratton was once again in action on his #21 bike in the S1 class, finishing a commendable 6th overall. The Veterans class featured Paul Grant-Mitchell on his #69 SXV550 who finished 4th on the day and 6th in the championship and his comrade in arms Gordon Milne who finished 7th in the championship despite missing this round. The novice/clubman class featured Erin Stevens on his #55 SXV550 who finished the championship in overall 5th place. Congratulations to all Aprilia privateers, we’re looking forward to seeing you out there next year.” S1 Results Round Six: Race One: 1st Angus Reekie KTM; 2nd Graham Cheney Husqvarna; 3rd Josh McFarlane Aprilia; 7th Shane Stratton Aprilia. Race Two: 1st Angus Reekie; 2nd Josh McFarlane; 3rd Ross Taylor Husqvarna; 4th Shane Stratton. Race Three: 1st Angus Reekie; 2nd Graham Cheney; 3rd Alistair Maxwell Honda; 5th Josh McFarlane; 6th Shane Stratton. Championship Overall: 1st Angus Reekie 422pts; 2nd Graham Cheney 370pts; 3rd Josh McFarlane 358pts; 6th Shane Stratton 213pts. Aprilia was founded immediately after the Second World War by Cavaliere Alberto Beggio, as a bicycle production factory at Noale, Italy in the province of Venice. Alberto’s son, Ivano Beggio, took over the helm of the company in 1968 and he constructed a 50 cc "motorcycle" with a dozen or so collaborators. The first production Aprilia mopeds were named Colibrì, Daniela and Packi. Aprilia later produced a motocross bike in 1970 called the Scarabeo. Produced until the end of the 1970s, the Scarabeo came in 50 and 125 cc versions. In 1977 Ivan Alborghetti from Milan, Italy won the Italian 125 and 250 cc motocross championships on Aprilias. In 1978 Alborghetti closed the season with two third places in individual races and sixth place in the World Championship. In the 1980s Aprilia added enduro, trials and road bikes of between 50 and 600 cc. In 1981 Aprilia introduced the TL320 trials machine. In 1983 Aprilia launched to St 125 road bike. In 1984 Aprilia launched an improved model called STX, and an enduro, called the ET 50. In 1985, Aprilia started outsourcing engines for some models to the Austrian company Rotax. In 1985 Aprilia launched a 125 STX and 350 STX. In 1986 Aprilia launched the AF1; a small sports model, and the Tuareg; a large tanked bike for African rallies. Aprilia rider Philippe Berlatier contended for the trials world championship reaching fifth place, and Loris Reggiani rode an Aprilia GP 250 with Rotax engine to sixth place in the road racing World Championship. Two seasons later, on August 30, 1987, at San Marino Grand Prix in Misano Loris Reggiani’s AF1 won the first World Speed Championship. In 1988, the first Aprilias were imported into the United States, starting with the TRX312M observed trials model. The following year, Aprilia introduced The Climber, the first "mass-production" liquid-cooled trials bike. In 1990, Aprilia launched the Pegaso 600, a road bike derived from off-road mechanics. In 1992, Aprilia rider Alessandro Gramigni won the World 125 Road Racing Championship title. Also in 1992, Tommy Ahvala won the World Trials Championship on an Aprilia Climber. Since then, Aprilia has 124 times won 125 and 250 cc class Grand Prix, 15 Road Racing World Championship titles, and 16 European speed titles. Many world champions started on Aprilia such as Biaggi, Capirossi, Gramigni, Locatelli, Sakata and Rossi. Also in the 1990s, Aprilia entered the scooter market starting in 1990 with Italy’s first all-plastic scooter, the Amico. In 1992, Aprilia introduced the Amico LK and the two-stroke single-cylinder enduro-styled Pegaso 125 (a more mildly tuned variant of the Rotax 123 engine as used in the AF1), both with catalytic converters. In 1993 Aprilia launched a large diameter wheel scooter reusing the name Scarabeo with a four-stroke, four-valve engine. Later Aprilia launched additional scooters such as the Leonardo, the SR and the Gulliver, to name a few. Aprilia Moto 6.5 designed by Starck Aprilia Moto 6.5 designed by Starck In 1993, Aprilia launched the two stroke RS125 followed by the RS250 in 1994. In 1995, Aprilia commission Philippe Starck to design the Motò which was shown in New York's Museum of Modern Art. In 1998 Aprilia launched what is its current flagship model the RSV Mille, a 1000 cc V2 Superbike, and the Falco, a 1000 cc V2 sport tourer with emphasis on sport. Both bikes used a variation of a Rotax 1000 cc engine. In 1999 Aprilia entered World Superbike Championship racing with its RSV Mille, and during 2000, Aprilia acquired Moto-Guzzi and Laverda, both historic heritage Italian marques. In 2001 Aprilia launched the 50 cc DiTech (Direct Injection Technology) two stroke engine for scooters which provides high milage and low emissions, and also the RST Futura; true sport tourer, and the ETV 1000 Caponord; an "Adventure Touring Motorcycle" (also known by some as a "Trailie.") Both of these latter two motorcycles used a variation of the Rotax a 1000 cc V2. In 2003, Aprilia launched the RSV Mille Tuono which was essentially an RSV Mille with motorcross-style high handlebars and only a small headlight fairing. Most of the major motorcycle magazines picked it for the best bike of the year. As of 2004, Aprilia was acquired by Piaggio & C. SpA, forming the world’s fourth largest motorcycle group with €1.5 billion in sales, an annual production capacity of over 600,000 vehicles, and a presence in 50 countries. With the acquisition by Piaggio, the newly nominated President of Aprilia is Roberto Colaninno (President of Piaggio & C.), and the Managing Director is Rocco Sabelli. The founder, Ivano Beggio, is the Honorary President.

Motorcycle Sport Gábor Talmácsi World Championship winner motorcycle racer on an Aprilia 125 cc Gábor Talmácsi World Championship winner motorcycle racer on an Aprilia 125 cc Despite being a relatively small company by global motorcycling standards, Aprilia is very active in Motorcycle sport. It contests many Road Racing formulae, including the FIM 125 cc World Championship, the FIM 250 cc World Championship, and the now-defunct FIM 500 cc World Championship. From 2002–2004 they participated in the FIM MotoGP World Championship, and from 1999–2003 they participated in the FIM Superbike World Championship. Aprilia Racing saw varying successes. They were extremely successful in the smaller displacement categories, winning numerous races & championships in the 125 cc Grand Prix and 250 cc Grand Prix classes. However, their 500 cc Grand Prix bike was less competitive, and their MotoGP effort, dubbed the RS3 Cube, was technically advanced but difficult to ride and performed poorly in the championship. The Cube did, however, feature many advanced technologies either not seen or only being seen now in other MotoGP bikes - technologies including fly by wire throttle and pneumatic valve actuation systems. They were 3rd in manufacturers points and 2nd in rider points in the Superbike World Championship 2001 with rider Troy Corser. This was their high water mark for that series. They used a homologation special version of their road bike the RSVR Mille. The motor for the racebike was specially built by Cosworth. Aprilia also feature in the off-road racing world, with their 450 cc V2 motocrosser producing respectable results (including race wins) in both off-road (Motocross) and on-road (Supermoto) categories. The company is also notable for choosing somewhat atypical engine configurations. For example, they progressed with development of a V2 500 cc Grand Prix bike when other teams were moving to V-Four configurations for what some believed was better & more usable power outputs. Aprilia continued this trend, taking advantage of lighter minimum weights with the introduction of their RS3 MotoGP bike - featuring three cylinders in an inline triple layout, the bike had the least number of cylinders on the Grand Prix paddock. Yamaha had gone ahead with an inline four layout, whilst Suzuki and Ducati went for (differently-designed) V-Four layouts. Honda took the idea even further, producing the championship-winning RC211V, powered by a V5 cylinder engine. [edit] 2007 Models Current Aprilia models for 2007 include: * ETV 1000 Caponord * Mojito Custom 150 * RSV 1000 (Mille) R and RSV 1000 R Factory * RXV 4.5 and 5.5 * SL 750 Shiver 750 Naked * Scarabeo 500 I.E. * SportCity 250 * SR 50 R Factory * SXV 4.5 and 5.5 * Pegaso 650 (Factory, Strada and Trail) * Tuono 1000 R and Tuono 1000 R Factory * RS125 125 * RS50 50 The Mana 850,a crossover between a scooter and a sportbike, is scheduled to be available in Europe in 2008.
